Representation vs. Interpretation of Conceptual Models

People conceive reality differently, conceptualizing it in a myriad of ways. These conceptualizations can, in turn, be used to abstract reality in what we call domain models. These can be specified using a modeling language that reflects such conceptualization and thus, formally define the model. This amounts that a model specification mimics the way people conceive reality. Interpreting this model specification is a way to understand the domain model of those responsible for it. However, in the event of an inevitable human error in the conceptual modelling process, the model specification may incorrectly represent the domain model.

Thus a correct interpretation of the domain model specification amounts to an incorrect understanding of the domain. Verification and Validation (V&V) are independent procedures that are used together for checking that a product, service, or system meets requirements and specifications and that it fulfills its intended purpose.

NEMO offers a modeling environment that allows V&V for such purposes and this work aims to model UFO-C as an OntoUML model to take advantage of such modeling environment.
